Apparently, I have thoughts…

So here’s the deal: I’m nobody.

I mean, really. In the grand scheme of things, I’m a peon on this earth, and I probably only matter to a handful of people. I’m okay with that. I have some things to say, and if you want to come read them, that’s great. If you don’t, this isn’t my classroom. You aren’t required to be here.

That’s right. I’m a teacher.

So… maybe I am someone to a few more people than I thought.

I teach high school journalism and oral and written communications (public speaking), and I teach GED classes two nights a week. They’re jobs I really love, and this is probably where I’m supposed to insert the cheesy line about how I don’t love them more than being a wife and mother.

Some days that’s true.

Some days, my high school classroom is my favorite place to be.

It just depends on the day.

You see, I have the best husband. He makes sure I eat and drink water (and now I sound like a cat). He even packs my lunches for work. I have two adult children and a third grader. Our family also consists of two dogs, three cats, a bearded dragon, and approximately twelve chickens.

So, yes. Sometimes wrangling 20-something ninth graders is easier than being home.

A little more about me: I just completed my master’s degree in Secondary English Education. I may mention that too much, but I’m really proud of it. Mostly because I completely gave up on all of these things 20 years ago.

Heck, five years ago, I was just trying to finish my bachelor’s degree without throwing in the towel.

Now I’ll be starting my Education Specialist degree in January and transferring into the Doctorate of Education program in the fall.

Imagine that.

Me. Dr. Alicia Babb.

I’m not there yet, but for the first time in my life, that doesn’t sound ridiculous when I say it. It sounds like a plan.

And I think that’s probably a pretty good explanation for what you’ll find here.

I’m a teacher, a wife, a mom, a student, and a person who has learned a whole lot of things the hard way. I have thoughts about education. I have thoughts about technology. I have thoughts about parenting. I have thoughts about the things we’re doing really well and the things we’ve collectively screwed up.

Apparently, I have enough thoughts that I bought them a website.

So, those are my thoughts for today.

I hope you’ve enjoyed getting to know me. I’ll be back soon because I have a lot of thoughts about the mess we’ve gotten ourselves into with our children and their phones.

And if you want to come back and read them?

Great.

If not, remember: this isn’t my classroom.

There’s no attendance policy here.
